Office Unicorn

Project:

Brand identity design

I absolutely LOVED working on this rebrand for Sarah AKA Office Unicorn! Sarah wanted something unique, bold and lively for her new identity so she could stand out and have clear brand recognition.

After reading through Sarah's in depth brand questionnaire and reviewing her mood boards, I carried out my own research and put together a brand strategy document which summarised her brand's unique personality, mission, vision and more! Along with the brand strategy I also presented her two style directions which we could take the brand. The first option was a bold and happy design, the second option was a minimal and magical feel. She chose the first option and then I started work on conjuring up some logo concepts.

I presented four logo concepts which consisted of a mix of customised type and unicorn icons. She liked these ideas, but something wasn't quite lighting her up. She then had a brilliant idea of incorporating a computer mouse cursor as a unicorn horn so I worked up an idea based on this. I iterated the design until Sarah was completely happy.

The final primary logo consists of a bold sans serif font with 'bouncy' letters for the word unicorn to add a playful feel to the identity. The cursor with 'click lines' or 'sparkles' represents Sarah's role as a virtual assistant and also the name of her business. I rolled out this theme to the rest of the brand including various alternative logos.

The final colour palette consists of a beautiful purple, a light neutral 'putty' shade and a dark navy. The pop colours are a striking lime green and a soft mint.

To complement the bold logo I chose a chunky, rounded serif font for headings and a clean sans serif for body copy. I finally suggested a handwritten style font to use sparingly through her brand to use for short captions etc.

Testimonial

"Office Unicorn was launched on a shoestring and so the branding and first logo was a DIY job that I was fairly happy with to get me started but after 18 months in business I was becoming established and had much more clarity around my target market so I wanted to upgrade my branding to reflect the business at this stage. I’d been following Alex on social media for some time and really admired her work so she was the first and only person I reached out to when I was ready to upgrade my brand. As a small business on a tight budget Alex talked me through her services and gave guidance to ensure I was spending on the right things – she even offered me a payment plan to spread the cost which allowed me to proceed sooner than I had anticipated. When delivering the service, Alex took the time to listen to my business story, understand my likes and dislikes and most importantly understand my target market. The process was straight forward; Alex is really friendly and approachable and whilst I had a good idea of what I like and don’t like, she was able to give professional guidance along the journey to ensure the end result was effective as well as something I was 100% happy with. I would highly recommend Alex’s services to anyone requiring a brand design or refresh."
